March 13, 2010 “Prohibition Style” raids at Philadelphia Bars Submitted by C.J. Stefanowicz: A real brouhaha has beer lovers in Philly frothing with anger. State regulators say all beer being sold in the state must be registered with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, created in 1933 to regulate the sale of alcohol. Raids were conducted at three upscale bars, where police confiscated three quarter barrels and 317 bottles believed to not have been registered properly with the state. Manufacturers of malt or brewed beverages must pay a $75 annual fee to register each brand. 2,800 beers are now registered in the state! Police are working with the Liquor Control Board to determine which of the seized beers are registered. So far, 72 of the 317 were returned!
