Michigan Votes to Repeal 18th Amendment

Michigan, the first state to support Prohibition, was the first state to vote to repeal the 18th Amendment on April 3, 1933.

Michigan had gone dry at midnight on April 30, 1918. Because of Detroit’s proximity to Canada, it became a major bootlegging spot. Importing illegal alcohol from our neighbors became Detroit’s second-largest industry after cars!

The Stroh Brewery Company managed to survive the dry years by manufacturing ice cream and continued this operation into the 1990’s .

The 21st Amendment ended Prohibition in 1933.
